McGuinty Government Supports Higher Student Literacy

Frontier College Recognized for Contributions to Literacy and Learning

TORONTO, May 11 - The McGuinty government is committed to
increasing literacy across the province and has provided a grant to Frontier
College, Attorney General and MPP for St. Paul's Michael Bryant announced
today on behalf of Education Minister Kathleen Wynne.
"We're proud to support Frontier College and its great work in promoting
literacy and learning in Ontario," said Bryant. "The programs that Frontier
College provide make learning accessible and help Ontarians of all ages
develop essential literacy skills."
The Ontario government is providing a $1 million grant to Frontier
College. The college recruits and trains volunteers to work with Canadians who
want to learn. Through training, workshops, conferences and volunteer
placement, the college supports children and families, community groups and
organizations in high-needs areas.
"We will use this money to provide training to thousands of volunteers so
they can help children and young people develop literacy and learning skills,"
said John O'Leary, president of Frontier College. "We are thrilled that the
Ontario government is supporting our work. This funding will help us train
more volunteer tutors who can work with literacy programs like reading
circles, homework clubs and English as a Second Language programs."
This is just one more example of how, working together, Ontarians are
supporting learning and literacy including:

- Reduced primary class sizes - this year, 93 per cent of Ontario's kindergarten-to-Grade-3 classes have 23 or fewer students - Funded 6,800 additional teachers in elementary and secondary schools - Invested in professional learning opportunities for teachers, principals and supervisory officers, including summer programs for teachers in literacy and numeracy. "Whether it's making primary class sizes smaller, investing in more teachers or supporting organizations like Frontier College, we continue to help Ontario's young people develop the reading and writing skills they need to be successful in life," said Wynne. "With our partners, we are helping more of Ontario's young people develop a solid foundation for learning that will last a lifetime." Disponible en français www.edu.gov.on.ca www.ontario.ca/progress
