Forty Aboriginal households living off-reserve will benefit from new affordable housing in Ottawa.
The Gignul Non-Profit Housing Corporation and Tungasuvvingat Inuit are local Aboriginal housing providers that will develop the new affordable housing.
The proposed site of the Gignul project will be at 1043 Cummings Avenue and the Tungasuvvingat Inuit project will be at 297 and 301 Savard Avenue, both in Ottawa's east end.
These new affordable housing projects in Ottawa are part of the $60-million First Nation, Inuit, Métis Urban and Rural (FIMUR) Housing Program for Aboriginal families living off-reserve and outside of the Greater Toronto Area. The province is working in partnership with Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services, which is administering the FIMUR Housing Program and working with local Aboriginal housing providers.
"The partnership between our government and Aboriginal communities continues to make great progress in providing more affordable housing for off-reserve Aboriginal families right here in Ottawa."
– Jim Watson
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing
"This housing announcement provides great opportunity for experienced urban Aboriginal housing providers to reduce waiting lists while stimulating the economy through new construction and building rehabilitation."
