McGuinty Government Helping Off-Reserve Aboriginal Families

New affordable housing in Toronto is opening the door to a better future by providing Aboriginal families living off-reserve with a safe, secure place to call home and creating new, good jobs.

With support from the GTA Aboriginal Housing Program, 32 units will be developed in the east-end of Toronto as part of the Nishnawbe Homes Dundas Street Project. The development is expected to create up to 70 construction jobs for local qualified workers, including Aboriginal people.

The City of Toronto also waived development fees and charges for the project, and exempted the development from property taxes for 25 years. This support will help to ensure the new units remain affordable for aboriginal families, individuals and seniors.

This initiative supports the government's Open Ontario plan to help strengthen Northern and Aboriginal communities and improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people living in urban areas.
