McGuinty Government Appoints Noted Economist To Head Greenbelt Council

Dr. Peter A. Victor has been appointed chair of Ontario's Greenbelt Council.

Dr. Victor is an economist who has worked on environmental issues for 40 years as an academic, public servant and consultant.

Currently an environmental studies professor at York University, he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in ecological and environmental economics and management. From 1996 to 2001 Dr. Victor was Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. Previous to that, he was an assistant deputy minister at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

Dr. Victor continues to provide advice to public, private and non-governmental organizations on areas such as air pollution and health, emissions trading, emerging issues, and full cost accounting at national and corporate levels.

  • The Greenbelt permanently protects 1.8 million acres of agricultural and environmentally sensitive land around the Greater Golden Horseshoe - an area larger than Prince Edward Island.
  • The Greenbelt Council provides the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing with advice on the Greenbelt and related issues.
  • The Province is committed to working with municipalities to consider requests to expand the Greenbelt.
