McGuinty Government Protecting Consumers

Ontario is educating consumers about their rights and protections before they buy or lease new and used cars.

The province is launching new vehicle-buying seminars that will be offered by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and in major Ontario centres throughout the summer. The free seminars will give consumers practical tips about the right way to buy a vehicle and raise awareness of consumer protection measures provided under the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002.

The one-hour seminars will be hosted in libraries, community centres, malls and schools. OMVIC hopes to present the seminars in multiple languages including French, Punjabi, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Ukrainian, Greek and Korean. A list of seminars and locations will be posted on the OMVIC website in May at www.buywithconfidence.ca.

The Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002 is administered by OMVIC on behalf of the Ontario government.

QUICK FACTS

  • 1.4 million vehicles are bought annually, on average, by Ontarians.
