McGuinty Government Congratulates Medal Winners

Ontario athletes, Christine Nesbitt and Kristina Groves, are Olympic champions, both winning medals in their quest for gold.

On Sunday, Ottawa native Groves captured the silver medal in the Ladies' 1,500 metre speed skating event in a time of 1:57.14. Earlier in the Games, Groves won the bronze medal in the Ladies' 3,000-metre speed skating event. Her time was 4:04.84. Also last Thursday, London native Nesbitt won the gold medal in the Ladies' 1,000-metre speed skating event in a time of 1:16.56.

Both women received financial support from the Ontario government through its Quest for Gold program.  Launched in 2006, the program helps Ontario's athletes — like Nesbitt and Groves — reach the highest level of international competition by giving them access to high-performance training and competitive opportunities. The program also supports athletes vying for spots on Canada's team for the Paralympic Games in March.

This week, Minister of Health Promotion Margarett Best joins thousands of Canadians in Vancouver, cheering on athletes like Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Ontario, also Quest for Gold recipients, who will skate for gold tonight in the ice dance final.

Since its inception, Quest for Gold has provided over $42 million to support more than 8,000 high-performance athletes and coaches across Ontario. Through this fund, the province is supporting 33 athletes representing Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Quick Facts

  • About 85 per cent of eligible Ontario athletes competing in the Olympics are Quest for Gold recipients.
  • At the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing, 131 of the 180 Ontario athletes on Team Canada were Quest for Gold recipients. Twenty-three of these athletes won medals.
