The following statement is from the Honourable Margarett Best, Ontario Minister of Health Promotion, in recognition of Ontario's athletes who competed in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games:
I am thrilled to congratulate all of our athletes who brought their best to the world stage at the 21st Olympic Winter Games. In total, 23 Ontario athletes reached the podium, including 13 who received funding through the province's Quest for Gold program.
Quest for Gold medal winners include:
Other medal winners from Ontario were Rebecca Johnston and Haley Irwin on the women's hockey team; and Dan Boyle, Drew Doughty, Chris Pronger, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Mike Richards, Eric Staal and Joe Thornton on the men's hockey team.
Congratulations to all of our athletes for your dedication, discipline and commitment to healthy, active living. You are an inspiration to all Canadians. I am pleased that the province's Quest for Gold program has played an important role in supporting many of you in your pursuit of athletic excellence.
With Sunday's closing ceremonies marking the end of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, I now look forward with great excitement to 2015 when Canada, and specifically Ontario, will welcome athletes from across the Americas for the Pan/Parapan American Games. The great achievements of Ontario athletes at these past winter games are an inspiration to our summer athletes who will compete with some of the best in the world, right here at home in 2015
