McGuinty Government Supports Athletes Pursuing Excellence At Paralympic Games

Ontario is supporting 22 paralympic athletes who will be representing Canada at the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver. Established in 2006, the province's Quest for Gold program is helping Ontario's paralympians reach the highest level of international competition by giving them access to high-performance training and competitive opportunities.

From March 12 - 21, paralympians from more than 40 countries, including Quest for Gold funding recipients from Ontario, will compete in five sports - ice sledge hockey; wheelchair curling; alpine skiing; biathlon; and cross-country skiing.

The province has committed $10 million to the Quest for Gold program in 2009-2010. Approximately $6.3 million is going directly to more than 1,100 high-performance athletes.
