McGuinty Government Improves Infrastructure, Creates Jobs

People traveling across the historic Little Current Swing Bridge that connects Manitoulin Island to the mainland on Highway 6 are in for a smoother ride.

The entire deck of the swing bridge is being replaced. This also involves the rehabilitation of the bridge's piers and abutments, as well as other improvements. The work is expected to create 50 jobs, start in early January and be completed in the summer of 2010.

The bridge will be closed to traffic from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for construction. The bridge will reopen briefly at 2 a.m. nightly to allow queued traffic to cross. A protocol has been established for emergency crossings during the night.

QUICK FACTS

  • Concreate USL Ltd. of Bolton, Ontario has been awarded the $7,287,000 contract.
  • Originally a railway bridge built in 1913, it is now exclusive to car traffic and is a designated historic site.
  • The bridge is the only link for vehicles between the island and the mainland during the winter when the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry is not in operation.
