McGuinty Government Helping Build New Sources Of Renewable Energy

A proposed hydroelectric plant on Lizard Creek could help reduce energy costs and position the region for future growth. With the support of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), Lizard Creek Power is developing plans and applying for permits and approvals for a one-megawatt hydroelectric power plant in North Shore Township. This could provide enough electricity for 1,000 homes. This planning phase of the project has created eight to 10 part-time jobs.

If approved, construction could begin as early as November 2010.

QUICK FACTS

  • The NOHFC is investing $90,000 in the project.
  • Waterpower, or hydroelectricity, is the backbone of Ontario's renewable energy supply, contributing 26 per cent (nearly 8,000 megawatts) of all electricity used in the province.
  • Ontario has more than 250,000 lakes and tens of thousands of kilometres of rivers and streams. About 50 lake and river systems currently provide all of Ontario's installed waterpower.
  • Ontario's waterpower industry directly employs more than 1,600 people and supports another 2,000 jobs
