McGuinty Government And Treaty #3 First Nations Reaffirm Closer Ties
Ontario and Grand Council Treaty #3 will continue to work together to promote greater economic opportunities for the Grand Council's First Nations communities. The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry and the Grand Council have signed a Letter of Commitment to continue improving and enhancing their working relationships. The parties recognize the need and desire of the Grand Council to develop capacity and business relationships to enable greater participation in economic development opportunities. This Letter of Commitment reaffirms a Letter of Intent to that effect signed a year ago at the Mitaanjigaming Roundhouse.
To date, the efforts of all parties have led to some notable milestones including:

- hiring of two resource sector coordinators, one for forestry and one for mining to work on capacity issues
- holding community information sessions
- the Grand Council's participation in economic development, lands and resources, mineral exploration and mining meetings, conferences, including Ontario Public Service Career Fairs in the territory
- expanding relationships and understandings through regular educational and information-sharing presentations
- working on developing communications/consultation tools and research projects to support and inform consultations related to resource development in the Treaty 3 territory

- Grand Council Treaty #3 includes 28 First Nations, two of which are located in Manitoba.
- Treaty 3 was signed on October 3, 1873 at the north-west angle of the Lake of the Woods.
