McGuinty Government Supports Expansion of Freshwater Industry
Ontario is supporting research to help expand the North's fish farming industry.
With support from the Province, the Northern Ontario Aquaculture Association will conduct research aimed at:
Partnering with organizations in Northern Ontario is part of the McGuinty government's plan to create and support jobs for Ontario families and to strengthen local economies.
With support from the Province, the Northern Ontario Aquaculture Association will conduct research aimed at:
- Developing a demonstration farm to attract visitors and potential investors
- Creating local hatcheries
- Developing and reviewing certification standards for the industry
- Increasing consumer awareness about farmed fish
- Building new partnerships with potential investors
Partnering with organizations in Northern Ontario is part of the McGuinty government's plan to create and support jobs for Ontario families and to strengthen local economies.
Quick Facts
- Ontario is investing $303,836 in this project through the NOHFC's Infrastructure & Community Development Program.
- Ontario's commercial aquaculture industry contributes about $65 million to the province's economy and produces about 10 million pounds of fish annually.
- In the 2011 Ontario Budget, the province committed a $10-million increase for a total of $100 million to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund in 2011-12.
- In June, Ontario had an increase of more than 40,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.7 percent.
