Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic To Open In Peterborough

McGuinty Government Improving Access To Care For 3,200 Ontarians

Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care

Coming this fall, a new Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic in Peterborough will bring peace of mind to 3,200 more people with access to health care closer to home.

Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics offer a team-based approach to frontline health care services by collaborating with doctors and other health care professionals.

Once fully operational, the VON 360 Degree Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic's team of staff will include four nurse practitioners, two registered nurses, two social workers, a part-time registered dietician and the collaboration of a doctor.

Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics are a key part of the government's plan to provide better access to health care services while improving quality and accountability for patients.

Quick Facts

  • By next spring, 25 Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics will be open across the province. Once open, these clinics are expected to serve more than 40,000 patients who currently do not have regular access to a family health care provider.
  • Since 2003, the government has more than doubled the number of education spaces for nurse practitioners.
  • Nurse practitioners began to discharge hospital patients beginning July 1, 2011 and will be able to admit patients to hospital starting July 1, 2012.
