Support For Ontario's New Distracted Driving Law

October 26, 2009 11:53 AM

"Safety is the responsibility of every driver on our roads, and it starts with the individual.  The new law will help create safe driving habits, reduce driver distraction, and help keep drivers and pedestrians safe."

- Chief Bill Blair, Toronto Police Service

"We know that talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous and Ontario's doctors commend the provincial government for taking steps to help make our roads safer.  It's time drivers curb the use of cell phones and other electronic devices and focus solely on driving to prevent unnecessary crashes that cause injuries and death."

- Suzanne Strasberg, President of the Ontario Medical Association

"Not only does the new law give police the tools to more effectively deal with driver distraction, but it serves as an important reminder to all drivers that safe driving requires our full and undivided attention.  This is every driver's responsibility to passengers, to pedestrians and to all other road users."

- Chief Daniel Parkinson, President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police

"Distracted driving is one of today's most serious road safety issues. With high-tech distractions like cell phones and MP3 players becoming increasingly common, not to mention all the other everyday distractions that drivers face, it's getting harder for drivers to focus on the task of driving."

- Don Forgeron, President and CEO, Insurance Bureau of Canada.

"Driver distraction has been a concern for our members for several years.   We are happy to have worked closely with the government to ensure safer roads for all Ontarians through this piece of legislation."

- Faye Lyons, External Affairs Specialist, Canadian Automobile Association

"At Union Gas, we were pioneers three years ago in prohibiting the use of handheld devices for our employees.  This policy has been instrumental in contributing to greater awareness and safety not only for our own employees and but also for other drivers.  We fully support the government's new measures to ensure all of us remain safer on the road."

- Julie Dill, President, Union Gas Limited
