McGuinty Government Improving Travel for Area Motorists

The second phase of major construction improvements to Highway 26 from Wasaga Beach to Collingwood, will begin in the new year.

Improvements will include four new lanes and associated bridges and intersections. Information and the design details were outlined in a public information centre open house held in the spring.

The project is the second phase of improvements already made in the area including the construction of the Batteaux River and Fairground Road bridges. A call for tenders is expected to be released this winter, with construction to begin once awarded.

QUICK FACTS

  • Approximately 17,500 vehicles travel on Highway 26 between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach per day. During the summer, the number increases to 20,900.
  • In Ontario's 2009 Budget, the McGuinty government committed $32.5 billion to infrastructure improvements:.$5.6 billion directly to highway infrastructure. These investments are expected to generate 50,000 jobs over two years.
