Starting January 25, 2010, people moving between Ontario and Australia can exchange valid driver's licences without having to take a knowledge or road test as long as they meet vision and medical standards and driving experience requirements of Ontario's Graduated Licensing Program.
The Ontario government is committed to making sure our roads stay safe and only qualified drivers are on our roads. Before we agree to a licence exchange agreement with another province or country, we make sure:
Moving to Ontario from Australia
Drivers from Australia can exchange their Class C driver's licence for an Ontario Class G licence if they have 24 months or more of licensed driving experience in the last three years, or an Ontario Class G2 licence if they have fewer than 24 months of driving experience. As well, drivers from Australia can exchange their valid Class R motorcycle licence for an Ontario Class M motorcycle licence, subject to driving experience.
New Ontarians can exchange an out-of-province driver's licence at one of the DriveTest Centres located throughout the province. Applicants will need to show identification (e.g. passport) and proof of licensed driving experience (e.g. a driver abstract from their home country). They must also meet vision and medical standards, pay any fees that may be prescribed and surrender their out-of-province licence.
