Snowmobile riders are reminded this week is Provincial Snowmobile Safety Week and to put safety first by avoiding unnecessary risks while having fun this winter.
Last winter, 23 individuals died while snowmobiling -- 13 were alcohol related, and 10 occurred on a frozen lake or river. To reduce the risk of injury or death, riders are strongly encouraged to follow these important safety tips:
"Alcohol, thin ice and freezing temperature have had tragic results for far too many Ontario riders. Please, ride responsibly and prepare for all conditions. It could save your life."
– Jim Bradley
Minister of Transportation
"In the interest of reducing needless death and injury, the OPP is actively enforcing the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act on Ontario trails. Trail users need to follow the law - it saves lives."
– Sergeant Michael Price
Off Road Safety Program Coordinator, OPP Highway Safety Division
"Snowmobiling is great family fun, but as with any motorized recreational activity, take it easy and obey the law. Always ride with care and control, within your ability and according to current conditions."
– Eric Saunter
Safety Manager for Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC)
