McGuinty Government Upholds Its Commitment To Openness And Transparency

The Ontario Government is requesting that the Niagara Parks Commission open a competitive process to lease land for tour boat operations in the Niagara gorge.

By recommending that the Niagara Parks Commission solicit competing bids, the Ontario government is upholding its commitment to openness, transparency and accountability.  This will help to ensure that Ontarians are provided with the best possible value in the delivery of a boat-related tourism attraction in Niagara Falls.

It is expected that a competitive process would be completed by spring 2010.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Niagara Parks Act gives the Niagara Parks Commission the authority to make business agreements for revenue generating opportunities. However, the NPC is required to obtain Lieutenant Governor in Council approval for land leases.
  • The Niagara Parks Commission receives a significant percentage of its gross revenues from the tour boat services originating from the Canadian shore.
  • The Niagara Parks Commission was established by the Ontario Government in 1885.
