More Ottawa Apprentices To Train At New Centre

Premier Dalton McGuinty helped open the new United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 93 Training Centre today.

The new centre will provide carpentry and safety training to apprentices and journeypersons. Ontario invested almost $400,000 in the Training Centre to help purchase tools, scaffolding, safety and other equipment.

Skilled trade workers, including carpenters and other construction workers, make an important contribution to Ontario's public infrastructure and economy. Last month, the government announced new ways to help workers complete apprenticeships.

Quick Facts

  • According to a report by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in the next two decades, 40% of new jobs will be in the skilled trades and technologies. In 1998, that number was less than 20%.
  • Learning the trades happens most on-the-job. About 10 per cent of apprenticeship training is offered in-school, at community colleges, or industry training centres.
  • Legislation was passed in October establishing the Ontario College of Trades.
