Barrie families will soon be able find family health care at a new clinic led by nurse practitioners opening at Georgian College.
Nurse practitioners are able to treat common illnesses and injuries, and order lab tests, X-rays and other diagnostic tests. They can also refer patients to specialists. They will work with doctors, nurses and other health care providers at the clinic.
Nurse practitioner-led clinics also help patients navigate the health system and connect them, if needed, with other service providers and community-based programs and services.
The Barrie clinic is one of 25 nurse practitioner clinics that will open over the next three years. Seven more nurse practitioner-led clinics will be announced in the next few weeks. The clinics are part of the government's plan to expand access to health care for all Ontarians.
"Nurse practitioner-led clinics will help ease the strain on emergency rooms. That means more Ontario families can get the primary care they need faster and more efficiently."
– Dalton McGuinty
Premier of Ontario
"More nurse practitioner-led clinics means more options for quality health care closer to home for thousands of Ontarians. This clinic will be a great family health care resource for the people of Barrie."
– Deb Matthews
Minister of Health and Long-Term Care
"Nurse practitioners are strengthening our health care system each and every day -- not only with their impressive knowledge and expertise, but with the caring and compassion they bring to their work."
– Aileen Carroll
MPP, Barrie
