Eight individuals were convicted and fined $220,758 for Tobacco Tax Act offences in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall on April 2, 2009.
Each of the individuals was charged by the Ministry of Revenue's Special Investigations Branch in separate incidents during which the OPP stopped vehicles and found unmarked cigarettes.
- Ryan Glaude of Cornwall was found guilty of possession of 357,000 unmarked cigarettes and must pay a fine of $132,758 and pay $33,189 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
- Brandon Groulx of Prescott pleaded guilty to possession of 40,000 unmarked cigarettes. He was fined $8,000 and must pay $2,000 to the Victims' Justice Fund
- Manon Gagliardi of Salaberry-Valleyfield (Que.) pleaded guilty to possession of 210,000 unmarked cigarettes. She received 12 months probation, was fined $20,000 and ordered to pay $5,000 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
- Robert MacFarlane of Cornwall pleaded guilty to possession of 212,000 unmarked cigarettes. He has to serve 12 months probation, perform 75 hours of community service and pay a fine of $15,000. MacFarlane must also pay $3,750 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
- Andrea McCullough of Long Sault entered a guilty plea to possession of 200,000 unmarked cigarettes. On conviction she received 12 months probation, 150 hours of community service and a $25,000 fine. She must also pay $6,250 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
- Vincent Hill and Carl Miller, both from Oshweken pleaded guilty to possession of 96,800 unmarked cigarettes. Hill received 12 months probation and a $5,000 fine. He must also make a $1,000 charitable donation and pay $1,250 to the Victims' Justice Fund. Miller received a suspended sentence.
- Kayla Square of Cornwall pleaded guilty to possession of 190,200 unmarked cigarettes. She received 12 months probation and 124 hours of community service. Square must also pay a $15,000 fine and pay $3,750 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
In all seven cases, the seized contraband cigarettes were forfeited to the Ontario government.
