Four Found Guilty for Possession Of 413,400 Unmarked Cigarettes

Ontario's Tough Tobacco Tax Laws at Work

Four individuals were convicted and fined a total of $57,320 for Tobacco Tax Act offences, in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall on May 21, 2009.

Each of the individuals was charged by the Ministry of Revenue's Special Investigations Branch in separate incidents during which the OPP stopped vehicles and found unmarked cigarettes.

  • Amy Benedict and Sarah Cole, both of Akwesasne, pleaded guilty to possession of 160,000 unmarked cigarettes. They must pay fines of $20,000 and $5,000, respectively, to the Victims' Justice Fund. They were both sentenced to 12 months probation and 100 hours of community service.
  • Trevor Steenwyk of Lyn, near Brockville, pleaded guilty to possession of 40,000 unmarked cigarettes. He was fined $15,320 and must pay $3,830 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
  • Colby Benedict of Akwesasne pleaded guilty to possession of 213,400 unmarked cigarettes. He received 12 months probation and 100 hours of community service. He was also fined $2,000 and ordered to pay $500 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
