Ontario is taking further steps to strengthen the economy by opening provincial borders to workers.
The Ontario Labour Mobility Act, 2009, passed today, means workers certified in any Canadian province or territory can be employed in Ontario without additional training or testing. This applies to over 80 regulatory authorities and 300 occupations -- including dentists, architects, and mechanics.
All provinces and territories have agreed to eliminate barriers that prevent certified workers from choosing where to live and work.
"Both workers and business are winners today. More workers are now free to move to find work where opportunities exist or where their skills are needed. Business can enjoy a simpler process for hiring qualified workers from other parts of Canada which can help them address critical skills shortages."
– John Milloy
Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities
"Through the Ontario-Quebec construction labour mobility agreement, our two provinces have developed good working relationships and we continue working together for our mutual benefit. Increased labour mobility between all of the provinces, and in all trades and professions, will make Ontario more productive and competitive in the global market."
– Peter Fonseca
Minister of Labour
