Helping Internationally Trained Professionals

Bursaries of up to $5,000 will be offered to newcomers through the Ontario Bridging Participant Assistance Program (OBPAP) to help cover education expenses for tuition, books and equipment.

To be eligible for a bursary, students must be:

• Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents or Protected Persons living in Ontario
• enrolled in Ontario government-funded college or university bridge training programs for skilled newcomers that charge tuition/fees
• enrolled in programs not approved for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

Needs-based bursaries are available for approved bridge training programs starting between September 1, 2009 and March 31, 2011. OBPAP applications must be received before the program ends or by March 31, 2011, which ever comes first.

Currently, 13 programs in eight colleges and universities are approved under the bursary program, including Centennial, Fanshawe and Mohawk colleges and University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, Ryerson University, McMaster University and York University.

Since 2003, the McGuinty government has invested more than $145 million in almost 200 bridge training programs, to help 35,000 newcomers get the training they need to get a job in their field.

The government also invests over $64 million a year to help more than 100,000 immigrants get the English and French language training they need to succeed in the workplace.
