McGuinty Government Building Partnerships To Deliver More Programs

Up to 13,000 more Ontarians each year will be able to build literacy and basic skills through expanded training opportunities.

As part of its ongoing plan to improve the literacy skills of Ontarians, the government is:

  • supporting more literacy projects, including training in the workplace
  • providing additional funding this year to help community agencies assist more learners
  • expanding the Academic Career Entrance (ACE) program to double the number of learners able to take academic upgrading courses online.
Many of these projects are run through unique partnerships with employers, community organizations and schools.

Quick Facts

  • Ontario is investing an additional $90 million over two years to expand literacy and basic skills training.
  • About 3.4 million Ontario adults have literacy skills at less than a high school level.
  • By 2020, about 70 per cent of new jobs are expected to require postsecondary education and training.
