More than 4,000 people free of welfare in February

Ministry of Community and Social Services

NEPEAN, ON, March 13 /CNW/ - Community and Social Services Minister John Baird announced today that 4,468 people stopped relying on welfare in February. This marks four straight years in which Ontario's welfare rolls have dropped in the month of February.
"It is encouraging whenever you see welfare rolls go down in February, because it can be a slower time of the year," said Baird. "That's why a decline in February is particularly encouraging: It shows our welfare reforms are helping people move from welfare to work."
In February, 33,842 people left the welfare system and 29,374 people came onto the system. Since the Harris government first took office in June 1995, 573,823 people have left the province's welfare rolls, many moving into paid employment.
"Welfare should be a safety net, not a permanent trap," said Baird. "It is critical that the people who come onto the system get the support they need to re-enter the workforce as soon as possible."
Ontario Works, the government's mandatory welfare-to-work program, not only provides financial assistance to people in need, but also helps people rebuild connections to the job market. People on welfare can get help with job searches, referrals to education and training programs, and valuable job experience and employer references through community and private-sector work placements.
Many of those remaining on the welfare system face complicated barriers to employment. To help those on welfare struggling with an addiction, the government will introduce a drug treatment policy. For those on welfare struggling with reading and math, the government is committed to proceeding with a literacy testing and training policy. And increased caseworker training will assist caseworkers in meeting the needs of those who require more specialized help to move into employment.
"No matter what obstacles they face, each and every welfare recipient deserves a chance to turn their life around by moving from welfare to work," said Baird.
