Ontario's welfare reforms continue to improve lives

Ministry of Community and Social Services

QUEEN'S PARK, ON, April 13 /CNW/ - Community and Social Services Minister John Baird announced today that 5,089 people stopped relying on welfare in March. With this latest decline, the Harris government has helped a total of 578,912 Ontarians leave the welfare rolls since June 1995.
"The Harris government's welfare reforms continue to help people break free of welfare dependency," said Baird. "We are providing welfare recipients with opportunities to get the skills, experience and contacts they need to find and keep a job."
Ontario Works, the province's mandatory welfare-to-work program, not only provides financial assistance when people need it most, but also links them to job opportunities through a wide range of employment supports. Under Ontario Works, welfare recipients can:

- prepare themselves for a better future through basic education and
job-specific skills training;

- participate in Ontario Works placements, which help people acquire
new work skills, gain valuable experience, develop contacts for job
references, and be matched to paid jobs; and

- participate in the Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) program
for teen parents, either on a mandatory or voluntary basis. LEAP
helps teens finish high school, become better parents, and avoid a
lifetime of welfare dependency.

"In spite of these successes, the Harris government recognizes that more needs to be done to help people on welfare who still face barriers to getting a job," said Baird. "Each and every welfare recipient deserves a chance to move from welfare to work."
