Harris government teams up with Variety and Jays to take kids to a ball game

Ministry of Community and Social Services

QUEEN'S PARK, ON, April 27 /CNW/ - Community and Social Services Minister John Baird announced today that the Harris government will host the 19th Annual Blue Jays Variety Kids Day in partnership with Variety -- The Children's Charity (Ontario) and the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club. Approximately 5,000 children and their chaperones from across Ontario will be in attendance to cheer the Toronto Blue Jays as they take on the Anaheim Angels at Toronto's SkyDome on Saturday, April 28.
"Everyone at the Ministry understands how much this experience means to these children," said Baird. "If it wasn't for Variety Kids Day, many of the children might never get a chance to see a major league baseball game at SkyDome. The Jays are off to a great start this year, so the kids should be in for an exciting time."
Kids Day has been a joint effort of the Ministry of Community and Social Services, Variety Club and the Toronto Blue Jays since 1983. The Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club donates the seats. Variety -- the world's largest children's charity -- helps with transportation costs. Ministry staff coordinate ticket distribution to agencies across the province. Sportservice Inc. makes the day a true baseball outing by donating hot dogs and soft drinks.
"There is nothing more rewarding than the sight of thousands of smiling children enjoying a ball game," said Ed Oliver, President/Chief Barker of Variety - The Children's Charity. "Everyone in Variety who's involved with Kids Day is dedicated to this wonderful project."
"We are pleased to continue our relationship with Variety - The Children's Charity and the Ministry of Community and Social Services," said Brenda Maynard, Director of Toronto Blue Jays Charitable Foundation and Community Relations. "The entire Blue Jays organization looks forward to hosting this special group of fans on Kids Day."
