Brockville, Guelph, Niagara Falls and North Bay to host export award ceremonies celebrating Ontario success in global markets

TORONTO, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Economic Development and Trade Minister Bob Runciman today announced that four Ontario communities will host regional export award ceremonies next spring celebrating the achievements of Ontario companies in world markets.
Minister Runciman kicked off the fourth annual Ontario Global Traders Awards program with a tour of the Soheil Mosun Limited plant facility in Etobicoke where the provincial awards are manufactured. Regional award ceremonies will be held in Guelph on March 21, Niagara Falls on March 28, Brockville on April 4, and North Bay on April 11, followed by a provincial ceremony in Toronto on May 15.
"Exporting is critical to Ontario's economy. It leads to job creation in local communities, and contributes to improving our quality of life," said Runciman. "It is very important to recognize the achievements of our global exporters and to celebrate their success."
Minister Runciman encouraged exporters to submit applications for the 2001 awards. "More than 600 submissions have been received in the first three years of the awards program and every year there are more and more success stories among Ontario exporters," he added.
Soheil Mosun Limited - a premier exporter worldwide, winner of the Etobicoke Chamber of Commerce's 1999 Business Excellence Export Award and participant in a 1996 Team Canada Trade Mission - also announced at the event that it had just won a $2 million (Cdn.) contract from General Motors (GM) to produce exclusive, custom-made products including stainless steel and glass interiors for GM's new automotive research centre in Warren, Michigan.
The Minister also welcomed the awards' new Lead Sponsor, RBC Financial Group. "We are very pleased to join these awards and to celebrate the achievements of Ontario's exporting heroes," said Duarte Miranda, Vice- President, Trade, RBC Global Services. "Helping SMEs reach out and succeed in export markets is part of our history at the bank and we're proud to be part of their success in global markets," he said.
"Exports of goods and services generate over $229 billion a year in Ontario. This represents more than 51 per cent of Ontario's economy, sustaining and creating jobs in our province," said Runciman. "We owe much of our growth and prosperity to the entrepreneurial spirit of small- and medium- sized exporters." Ontario's prosperous economic climate has resulted in 838,000 net new jobs since 1995.
The Ontario Global Traders Awards are presented by Ontario Exports Inc. - the Government of Ontario's lead trade agency - and the Awards' new lead sponsor, RBC Financial Group. Other sponsors include the Export Development Corporation, Deloitte & Touche LLP, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and Canadian Commercial Corporation.
