Harris government helps bring Christmas cheer to Ontario's young kids
QUEEN'S PARK, ON, Dec. 5 /CNW/ - Community and Social Services Minister John Baird is encouraging Ontarians to get involved in Christmas toy drives across the province this year. Premier Mike Harris, on behalf of all Ontarians, has pledged to lend his support to these toy drives to try to make sure no child goes without a gift during this holiday season.
"As we did last year, Ontario will support the hard work community agencies have been doing successfully for years -- collecting and distributing toys for young children who might otherwise go without," said Baird. "As both individuals and as a government we will do what we can to help make this a happy holiday for all children."
Corporate and regional ministry staff have linked with community agencies across the province, including the Salvation Army and Children's Aid Societies. Many of these agencies are leaders in their communities with a long and proud history of helping out local families at Christmas.
For those who have a young child who may otherwise not receive a gift, the number to call in Toronto is 416-325-5666. The toll-free number outside the Toronto area is 1-888-789-4199. The lines will be open until Christmas Eve. Those wishing to make a donation should get in touch with local agencies running these many toy drives.
"It is a pleasure to support the work community agencies do every year during the holiday season," said Baird. "We encourage both the private and non- profit sectors to participate in this year's campaign."
