Colleges receive $16.4 million funding based on performance

TORONTO, March 4 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is providing $16.4 million in funding to colleges based on the number of graduates who successfully found a job and the satisfaction of employers and graduates with their education, said Dianne Cunningham, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.
"The economic prosperity of our province depends on having an educated and skilled workforce," said Cunningham. "Students and parents alike can see from the results of our performance measurements that colleges are playing a vital role in preparing a highly skilled workforce to ensure Ontario's economic prosperity."
This is the second year a portion of the annual funding has been allocated to colleges based on each institution's performance in three key performance indicators (KPI). Performance-based funding for 2001-02 is based on:

- the employment rate of 1998-99 graduates six months after graduation;
- employers satisfaction with how well graduates were prepared for the
workplace; and
- satisfaction of 1998-99 graduates with their education.

Since 1998, colleges have been measuring their performance annually based on five key performance indicators including student satisfaction and graduation rate.
Colleges reported that an average of 89.7 per cent of 1998-99 college graduates are employed in 1999-00 six months after graduation. They also reported that 91.4 per cent of employers were satisfied with graduates and that 80.5 per cent of graduates were satisfied with their education.
"Our colleges have been at the forefront in providing students and parents with a clear picture of the quality of education received at our colleges and how they are successfully preparing graduates for the future," Cunningham said.
In 2001-02, Ontario colleges received a total of $745.8 million in provincial operating grants.
