Ministry of Colleges and Universities

LONDON, ON, April 16 /CNW/ - The Ernie Eves government and its partners will invest $43 million to create 2,875 new student spaces in London to meet the growing enrolment demand in the next decade, Dianne Cunningham, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities announced today.
"Through SuperBuild, we are building on our previous investments to create a lasting legacy for students here in southwestern Ontario," Cunningham said. "Today, we are creating spaces where they are most needed. We are responding directly to the demands of future enrolment growth driven by changing demographics, rising participation rates and choices students are making about where they want to study."
At The University of Western Ontario, the government and its partners will invest $29.74 million to upgrade the Biomedical Sciences Building and create 1,794 new students spaces. At Fanshawe College, the government and partners will invest $13.41 million to expand the Life Sciences, Technology and Trades area and create 1,081 new student spaces.
Premier Ernie Eves this week announced that the government with its partners would invest $382.2 million to create 21,484 new student spaces in colleges and universities across Ontario. Thirteen institutions, including nine universities and four colleges, will receive funding for a mix of projects including construction of new buildings or additions and the purchase and renovation of existing buildings.
"With this week's announcement, we are creating one-third more spaces than the target announced last December -- which will ensure that every willing and qualified student will continue to find a space in the postsecondary system for years to come," Cunningham said. "I want to compliment The University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College for the innovation, creativity and cost effectiveness demonstrated in their approved projects."
"Together with the community partners who supported this proposal, we are ecstatic that the Ontario government recognized our ability to respond quickly to the labour market needs in this part of the province," said Dr. Howard Rundle, president of Fanshawe College.
"We are grateful to the Ontario government for the new funding which will help us create state-of-the-art teaching facilities for students in medicine, nursing, and health sciences," said Dr. Paul Davenport, President of The University of Western Ontario. "It will expand our ability to recruit and retain outstanding students and faculty in the biomedical disciplines, and help secure the City of London's position as a leader in biotechnology and biomedical research."
The government, with its partners, is making the largest investment -- approximately $2.6 billion -- in the postsecondary education system since the 1960s to create a total of more than 135,000 new student spaces at universities and colleges all across the province. This includes spaces that universities and colleges have committed to create through efficiencies and renewal of existing facilities. Since 1999, the Ontario government has committed $377.5 million to help institutions meet this commitment to modernize and renew existing buildings.
In southwestern Ontario, the government and its partners are investing a total of $250.5 million in nine projects to create 11,182 new students spaces.
"Beginning with our plan for students in the double cohort, we have clearly put Ontario at the forefront in Canada in building a postsecondary system that will prepare our students for the opportunities of the 21st Century," Cunningham said. "In addition, we will continue to assess the capital needs of our postsecondary institutions as we plan to accommodate enrolment growth that is expected to continue until 2015."

EVES GOVERNMENT CREATES 2,875 NEW SPACES IN LONDON

The SuperBuild projects for postsecondary institutions will create 2,875 new student spaces in southwestern Ontario.
Two projects -- at the University of Western and at Fanshawe College -- were included in a recent announcement that the government and its partners will invest $382.2 million to create 21,484 new student spaces at nine universities and four colleges.
Priority was given to cost-effective proposals that will increase the number of student spaces in areas where they are most needed. As with previous postsecondary SuperBuild projects, partner support will play a significant role in the implementation of the SuperBuild commitment.
Including the previous investments of $2.2 billion that are creating more than 79,000 new student spaces, the Ontario government and its partners are now investing approximately $2.6 billion to create more than 135,000 new student spaces at campuses across the province. This includes spaces that universities and colleges have committed to create through efficiencies. The chart below shows all of the government and partner investments through SuperBuild at postsecondary institutions in southwestern Ontario.
