Inquest in the death of Derek Samuel McCracken

ST. CATHARINES, ON, Oct. 17 - Dr. Christopher K. Rathwell, Regional Coroner for Niagara, announced today that an inquest will be held into the death of Derek Samuel McCracken. Mr. McCracken, 29, died in Brantford General Hospital on December 16, 2002, after being arrested earlier that day. Under the Coroners Act, deaths in custody are subject to mandatory inquests. The inquest jury will review the facts surrounding Mr. McCracken's death and may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest is expected to last two days. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 24, 2003, at the Brantford Court House, 70 Wellington Street, Brantford. Dr. Rathwell will preside as Inquest Coroner and Mr. George Orsini, Assistant Crown Attorney, will be Counsel to the Coroner.
