Inquest into death of Benjamin Lance Mitton announced

ST. CATHARINES, ON, Oct. 31 - Dr. Christopher K. Rathwell, Regional Coroner for Niagara, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Benjamin Lance Mitton. Mr. Mitton, 25, died in the Brantford jail on March 31, 2003, after being arrested on March 26, 2003. Under the Coroners Act, deaths in custody are subject to mandatory inquests. The inquest jury will determine the facts surrounding Mr. Mitton's death, and may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest is expected to last three days. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 27, 2003, at the Brantford Court House, 70 Wellington Street, Brantford. Dr. Rathwell will preside as Inquest Coroner, and Mr. Robert Ash will act as counsel to the Coroner.
