McGuinty government stops planned sell-off of OPG Nuclear Inspection Services Division

Ministry of Energy

QUEEN'S PARK, ON, Nov. 6 - Energy Minister Dwight Duncan today announced that the McGuinty government has fulfilled an important commitment by directing Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to cancel the proposed sale of its Nuclear Inspection Services Division. The Nuclear Inspection Services Division performs vital engineering inspections on nuclear components and is an important part of the safety process at nuclear facilities. "We believe there must be strong public oversight to maintain the safety of our nuclear facilities," said Duncan. "That's why our government moved quickly to keep its commitment to stop this planned sell-off and protect the public interest." OPG will not pay any financial penalties by canceling the proposed sale. The McGuinty government is committed to taking a responsible approach to ensuring that families, institutions and small and large businesses alike have a safe, reliable and affordable supply of energy to meet their needs in Ontario.
