Inquest in the death of youth in custody announced

TORONTO, Nov. 26 - Dr. James Edwards, Regional Supervising Coroner for Toronto East, today announced that an inquest will be held in the death of a youth who was being held in custody. The youth died at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto on October 2, 2002, while in custody at the Toronto Youth Assessment Centre. Under the Coroners Act an inquest is mandatory when a person dies while in custody. The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the youth's death and may make recommendations at preventing similar deaths. The inquest is to start on January 19, 2004, at The Coroners Court, 15 Grosvenor Street Toronto. Dr. David H. Evans will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Al O'Marra act as counsel to the coroner.
