Inquest into death of Arthur Meere announced

ST. CATHARINES, ON, Jan. 14 - Dr. Christopher K. Rathwell, Regional Coroner for Niagara, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Arthur Meere. Mr. Meere, 80, died at Hamilton General Hospital on April 29, 2000, while in the custody of the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory when a person dies while in custody. The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at the Sopinka Court House, 45 Main Street East, Hamilton. Dr. Roy Chivers will preside as inquest coroner and Ms. Wendy Sabean, Crown Attorney, will be counsel to the coroner.
