Inquest into death of Donald Belcot announced

ST. CATHARINES, ON, Jan. 14 - Dr. Christopher Rathwell, Regional Coroner for Niagara, announced today that an inquest will be held into the death of Donald Belcot. Mr. Belcot, 53, died at Hamilton General Hospital on April 6, 1999, while in the custody of the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory when a person dies while in custody. The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2004, at the Sopinka Court House, 45 Main Street East, Hamilton. Dr. Roy Chivers will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Steven O'Brien, Crown Attorney, will be counsel to the coroner.
