Ministry of Labour

TORONTO, March 12 - Labour Minister Chris Bentley named Jill Hutcheon interim chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) today. Hutcheon is the Chief Corporate Services Officer at the WSIB. Prior to joining the WSIB a year ago, Hutcheon was Deputy Minister of Labour for nearly four years. She also served as the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Safety and Regulation Division of the Ministry of Transportation and Registrar of Motor Vehicles for Ontario. "The WSIB is a vitally important organization to the people of Ontario," said Bentley. "I am pleased to have someone of Jill's calibre in place who can make sure the focus remains on serving injured workers while efficiently and effectively managing the WSIB's resources." The WSIB is an arm's-length government agency that provides disability benefits through a no-fault insurance plan to injured workers. The WSIB also oversees Ontario's workplace safety education and training system. With an administrative budget of nearly $700 million and assets of more than $11 billion, which it manages on behalf of injured workers and employers, the WSIB handles about 360,000 claims per year and has a staff of approximately 4,300, located throughout Ontario.
