Inquest in the death of Shalendra Chand Jaitly announced

BRAMPTON, ON, June 18 - Dr. William Lucas, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Ontario, today announced that an inquest will be held in the death of Shalendra Chand Jaitly. Mr. Chand Jaitly, 27, died April 20, 2003, at William Osler Health Centre, Brampton Memorial Hospital Campus, shortly after being taken into custody by Peel Regional Police. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory when an individual dies while in custody. The inquest will review the events surrounding the death and may result in recommendations aimed at the prevention of deaths in similar circumstances. The inquest will begin on June 30, 2004, at 9:30 a.m. at the Grenville and William Davis Courthouse, 7750 Hurontario Street, Brampton. Dr. James Edwards will preside as inquest coroner. Mr. David Carruthers will act as counsel to the coroner.
