Ministry of Infrastructure

Public Consulted On Growth Plan For Greater Golden Horseshoe TORONTO, July 28 - Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan led a public information meeting today with Toronto residents on the government's ambitious plan to build strong and vibrant communities in this area. "For the first time in Ontario, our government is planning for population growth and economic expansion in a rational, intelligent way, instead of trying to play catch-up after the fact," Caplan said. "I am very pleased that people are taking the time to give us their comments and have contributed towards building stronger communities with an outstanding quality of life." The discussion paper, Places to Grow, outlines the government's vision for strong, healthy communities over the next 30 years and beyond. The document is designed to prevent urban sprawl, reduce traffic congestion and minimize environmental problems by providing a guide for provincial decisions covering a wide range of development-related issues. "I believe this plan will make our community stronger, safer, more prosperous and liveable," said David Zimmer, MPP for Willowdale. "The decisions that come out of this session will help determine what our communities will look like for years to come, by helping to determine where and how we grow." This was one of a series of public meetings that gives local residents, municipal officials and businesses an opportunity to comment on the province's plans for growth in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The ministry will prepare a final plan for growth incorporating the public input this fall.
