TORONTO, Dec. 31 - The Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Honorary Patron of the Canadian Red Cross in Ontario, will visit the Canadian Red Cross this afternoon to express the appreciation of all Ontarians for the Red Cross's significant efforts in coordinating relief and fundraising efforts for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in South East Asia. His Honour will meet with volunteers and Canadian Red Cross staff as well as members of the public who come in to offer financial and other support. His Honour will visit the Yonge Street office at 1623 Yonge Street (1 1/2 blocks north of St. Clair Avenue on the east side of Yonge Street) today at 3 pm. "I have been greatly touched and impressed by the response shown by all Ontarians to the tragedy in Southeast Asia. Toronto and Ontario are made up of so many diverse cultural groups and our province's Indian, Indonesian, Sri Lankan and Thai communities have been strongly affected by the earthquake and tsunami and many are mourning the deaths of family members, friends and loved ones," said his Honour James K. Bartleman. "It is heartening to see how Ontarians have responded to the tragedy through generous donations and through the work of relief organizations like the Red Cross. As Honorary Patron of the Red Cross in Ontario and on behalf of all Ontarians, I want to express my sincere appreciation for the important work being done in Southeast Asia." To date, the Canadian Red Cross has raised $26.4 million from public and corporate donations for the Asia Earthquake and Tsunami Relief fund. Funds raised will help the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and local Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to provide immediate relief and basic assistance such as tents, blankets, water purification tablets and generators to the tens of thousands of affected people by this tidal wave and earthquake. For further information: contact: Nanda Casucci-Byrne, Director, Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Cell.
