The Lieutenant Governor actively promotes literacy. In 2004 he launched a Book Program that provided over 850,000 books to First Nations schools and Friendship Centres throughout Ontario. To build on that success, Mr Bartleman is now working with the Ontario Principals' Council to twin Native and non-Native schools, to encourage pen pals, student exchanges, replenishing of First Nations school libraries, and bridge building between aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities.
