Increased investment in bridge benefits County of Elgin

Ministry of Infrastructure

ST. THOMAS, ON, March 29 - Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing; Steve Peters, Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food and MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London; and James A. McIntyre, Warden of the County of Elgin, today announced an increase in funding under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program for the Vienna South Bridge project. As a result of an increase in eligible project costs for replacing the Vienna South Bridge to support industrial, agricultural and tourist transportation in the Bayham area, the governments of Canada and Ontario will each contribute up to $342,845 to the project. This represents a total increase of $202,356 from the initial joint investment of $483,334 announced on January 14, 2002. The County of Elgin will invest the balance of the project's total eligible cost. "I am pleased to announce this increase in Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program funding for this crucial project in the County of Elgin," said Mr. Fontana. "The Vienna South Bridge rehabilitation is an essential infrastructure priority for the community and residents of Elgin, and we are pleased to be working with our partners to ensure its safety." The Government of Canada's funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework, added Mr. Fontana. "The Ontario government is committed to improving essential infrastructure in our rural communities," said Mr. Peters. "Replacing the Vienna South Bridge is an example of how we are helping to build strong rural communities by improving the quality of life for all Ontarians." "This project has been a priority for our community and we are very grateful for the contributions by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario in making this project a reality," said Warden McIntyre. This is one of a series of matching federal and provincial investments to help municipalities protect the health and safety of their residents through essential infrastructure projects, totalling more than $1.3 billion to date in Ontario.
