Ontario Calls For Fairness and a New Approach To The Fiscal Imbalance

Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs

Ontario Campaigns for a Strong Ontario for a Strong Canada OAKVILLE, ON, June 12 - Ontario is calling on the federal government to find a new approach to Canada's fiscal imbalance that ensures fairness for all Canadians, Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs announced today. "It's clear that the federal government has more revenue than it needs to fulfil its responsibilities, while the provinces and territories don't have enough to meet theirs," said Bountrogianni. "All provinces need a greater share in order to continue delivering high quality programs to Canadians." In a speech to the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, Bountrogianni emphasized that addressing the fiscal imbalance is essential to all Canadians, including the 39 per cent of Canadians who live in Ontario. This imbalance undermines the ability to build a strong Ontario for a strong Canada. It also undermines the delivery of important public services such as health care, education, infrastructure and other social programs. The federal government currently provides Ontario with less per capita funding than it provides to other provinces. Ontario receives $86 less per capita cash in Canada Health Transfers and Canada Social Transfers from the federal government than equalization-receiving provinces. In fact, Ontario ranks last when it comes to support for postsecondary education, while taxing at the national average. Going forward Ontario wants solutions to the fiscal imbalance that will benefit all Canadians, no matter which province they live in. "Ontarians are committed to doing their part to make Canada strong and prosperous, but all Canadians should be treated fairly," said Bountrogianni. "Outside the existing Equalization program, federal transfers to provinces should be delivered on an equal per capita basis."
