Ontario Seeks Fairness For All Canadians

Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs

A Strong Ontario for a Strong Canada LONDON, ON, June 15 - The federal government has more money than it needs to meet its responsibilities, while the provinces and territories don't have enough to meet their own, was the message brought to the London Chamber of Commerce today by Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. "Ontario is seeking fairness for all Canadians. We are calling on the federal government to find a workable solution to the fiscal imbalance," said Bountrogianni. "This fiscal imbalance undermines all provinces' abilities to invest in key areas that promote prosperity and competitiveness: education, health care and infrastructure." In a London Chamber of Commerce speech, Bountrogianni emphasized that the federal government has collected more money than it needs from Canadians, including the 39 per cent of Canadians who live in Ontario. This imbalance undermines Ontario's ability to deliver important public services and social programs. The federal government continually provides Ontario with less per capita funding than it provides to other provinces. Currently, Ontario ranks 10th out of 10 provinces in terms of overall per capita government spending, including 10th out of 10 in post-secondary investment. "Ontarians are proud of their historic commitment to enhancing services across Canada through the Equalization program," said Bountrogianni. "However, the program has increased by 30 per cent in four years, and will continue growing annually by 3.5 per cent. There's no evidence suggesting the program is not meeting its intended goals and needs to be enriched even further." Going forward Ontario wants solutions to the fiscal imbalance that will benefit all Canadians, no matter which province they live in.
