Ontario Seeks Support for Fiscal Fairness Campaign

Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs

A Strong Ontario for a Strong Canada WHITBY, ON, June 28 - Resolving the fiscal imbalance is crucial to ensure Canada remains prosperous and competitive, Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, said today. "Ontario is calling on the federal government to find a new approach to Canada's fiscal imbalance that ensures fairness for all Canadians," said Bountrogianni. "All levels of government have to work together to achieve this goal." The federal government has more money than it needs to meet its responsibilities while provinces don't have enough resources to meet theirs, stressed Bountrogianni, speaking at the Whitby Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade. She noted that the future prosperity of all Canadians depends to a large extent on Ontario's ability to continue to generate wealth, to invest in people and to face the challenges and opportunities of today's global economy. Canada's future prosperity was also the focus of Premier McGuinty's June 21, A Strong Ontario for a Strong Canada summit, where over 200 community and business leaders demonstrated their support for Ontario's campaign for fairness to address the fiscal imbalance. Working with stakeholders, experts and the federal government, the Ontario government expects to maintain a strong and prosperous Ontario that contributes to a strong and prosperous Canada. "It's only fair that all Canadians be treated equally," said Bountrogianni. "We are urging the federal government to choose a solution that benefits all Canadians, including those who live in Ontario." Premier McGuinty will continue his campaign to address the fiscal imbalance when he meets with Canada's premiers in July at the Council of the Federation meeting in St. John's, Newfoundland.
