Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister and Stratford Mayor Present Southern Ontario to International Consular Corps STRATFORD, ON, Nov. 9 - Ontario Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dr. Marie Bountrogianni and Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson today welcomed Heads of Consular Posts, the world's representatives to the province, to Southern Ontario. "This is an exciting opportunity to showcase what Ontario - the gateway to North America - has to offer to the rest of the world," Bountrogianni said. "We value the relations we enjoy with the rest of the world, and we encourage our distinguished guests to take news of our home to their homes abroad." Consular Corps officials, representing dozens of countries, began a tour to Southern Ontario today. The tour opened with a visit to the award-winning facilities of the Perimeter Institute, an independent, non-profit research centre that provides a wide array of educational outreach activities for students, teachers and the general public across Canada and around the world. Consular Corps officials also attended a luncheon co-hosted by Minister Bountrogianni and Mayor Mathieson, as well as a performance of "South Pacific" at the Stratford Festival. Operating since 1952, the Festival - the largest repertory theatre in North America - presents classical and contemporary plays and musicals, with special emphasis on the works of William Shakespeare, as well as a variety of educational programs. "This is a great opportunity to showcase the City of Stratford, promote our industrial base and the Stratford Festival, and to encourage foreign investment and tourism," Mathieson said. "We would like to thank the Government of Ontario for supporting our efforts to promote our community to the world's representatives." As part of its commitment to expanding the province's relationships abroad, Ontario has recently opened International Marketing Centres in Tokyo, London, Los Angeles and New Delhi, joining three already in place in Munich, Shanghai and New York City. In addition, Premier Dalton McGuinty will lead an Ontario economic and business mission to India and Pakistan in January. Ontario is host to permanent representatives from 101 foreign countries, one of the largest Consular Corps in the world. Many of these officials were present in Stratford today. "Ontario is one of the world's greatest centres for diversity, innovation and economic opportunities," said Bountrogianni. "It is the ideal place to live, work and invest."
