Minister Pupatello Strengthens Ontario/Alberta Alliances

Partnerships Support Oil Sands Development, Create Opportunity For Ontario Manufacturers ALBERTA, Feb. 12 - Ontario's manufacturing sector can be a major partner in the development of Alberta's oil sands, said Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Trade Sandra Pupatello today as she kicked off a three-day visit to Alberta to meet with energy sector and government officials. "Ontario's manufacturers have the capacity that Alberta companies need to deliver oil sands projects on time and on budget," said Pupatello. "Ontario accounts for almost half of Canada's manufacturing base and is a leader in innovation and advanced technologies. This makes Ontario the natural choice for Alberta companies seeking to expand their supply chain." Alberta's oil sands projects are expected to generate capital projects worth more than $100 billion by 2020. This unprecedented demand has forced many energy sector suppliers to seek additional manufacturing capacity outside of Alberta. Ontario firms specializing in metal products, industrial machinery and equipment, and engineering and construction can help meet that demand. The three-day program includes meetings with energy sector executives and government officials in Calgary and Edmonton. Minister Pupatello will deliver a keynote address to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13 (please visit www.calgarychamber.com for details). Later the same day, the minister will hold discussions with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. The Alberta visit is part of an ongoing strategy to build east-west partnerships and follows a November 2006 delegation of 27 Ontario manufacturing companies led my Minister Pupatello. In March, the Minister will lead a further delegation of more than 200 Ontario manufacturers to the National Buyer Seller Forum in Edmonton - the premier event for oil sands procurement. "Ontario companies have the products and skills that Alberta needs," said Pupatello. "We are already making an impression with Alberta buyers. By building on this momentum we can create new opportunity for Ontario's manufacturing workers."
