Ontario Calls For Community Go Green Fund Applications

Program Promotes Public Education And Community Action On Climate Change TORONTO, Dec. 5 - The Community Go Green Fund, an initiative of the Ministry of the Environment, is now accepting applications from across the province for local projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, provide outreach and education and promote long-term behaviour change. The four-year, $6.6 million fund is a component of the Ontario government's plan to fight global warming. Other initiatives include investing in advanced research, clean technologies and more public education. "Province-wide public participation in Ontario's climate change plan is essential for us to meet our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets," said Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen. "The Community Go Green Fund will provide funding for not-for profit groups at the local and grassroots level to take action on global warming and run programs in Ontario communities." The province announced its GHG reduction targets in June and is continuing to deliver on commitments such as closing coal-fired plants by 2014, phasing out inefficient light bulbs by 2012 and unprecedented investments to increase renewable energy that will reduce the province's GHG emissions, both in the short and long-term. Ersilia Serafini, Executive Director of the Clean Air Foundation comments, "The Ontario government has recognized the importance of multi-sectoral partnerships to engage the public in actions that result in measurable emission reductions. The Clean Air Foundation is pleased that the Community Go Green Fund will continue to support innovative partnerships that will result in programs to improve our environment and our health."
